Wood Joints Module: Animations and Interactive Tests

Learning Objectives

Students will learn that: 

• solid timber is very absorbent at its ends
• the ends of solid timber have "end grain"
• gluing to end grain results in a weak joint
• the aim of wood joints is to: 
  • glue to the sides of timber whenever possible
  • include a mechanical joint 
• joints are designed for particular purposes
• there are a range of standard joints that may be adapted for specific purposes
• knock down fittings (KD fittings) are utilised in the construction of mass produced furniture
• there are a range of adhesives available for particular uses and environments
• screws used to fix timber parts may be hidden in plugged counterbores
• joints must be marked out and cut and shaped accurately.
