Batch Production 
and Customisation

In this exercise, you will answer questions about the process of making a batch of identical products and then customising them to customers' individual requirements.

You will need to consider how copper discs could be cut from copper sheet quickly and accurately.

You will need to consider how the discs could be smoothed and polished so that they could be worn as jewellery.  You will also need to consider how they could be customised to match people's requirements.

Name a tool that could be used to cut hundreds of identical discs from copper strip.

Name a machine that could be used to smooth and polish the edges of the discs.

Designs may be etched onto the discs.  Briefly describe the etching process.

Name two tools that could be used to make a 3mm. hole in the discs.

State 3 safety precautions you would take when using one of these tools.

How many products in a batch?  
One,  millions, or more than one but less than a million.

Products may be customised by offering a choice of material for a pendant. 
State 3 alternative metals to copper.

A pendant may be customised by changing the design that will be etched into it.  State two ways that we could ensure that a customer's design would fit onto the disc.

Describe what changes you would make to the disc to turn it into a badge or brooch.

Describe what changes you would make to the disc to turn it into an ear-ring.
